Hillel Academy has served as Denver’s Jewish community school since 1952 and has been at its present location, 450 S. Hudson St., since 1965. Families from the east side, west side, southeast, metro Denver, Westminster, Boulder, Colorado Springs and Fort Collins send their children to Hillel Academy. Our dedicated staff of highly qualified Judaic studies and general studies teachers consists of seasoned teachers with experience and wisdom and newer teachers with youthful enthusiasm and energy that blend to create a vibrant learning environment for our students. The staff is a close knit and selfless group that is focused on each and every student as an individual and is committed to effectively conveying Hillel’s dual curriculum in Judaic and general studies.
Hillel’s preschool through eighth grade students are exposed to a wide variety of learning experiences in both Judaic and general studies. Our small classes ensure not only individualized attention, but also provide the opportunity for frequent parent/teacher communication. In today’s world, less lecture-style teaching takes place and more “real life” active learning occurs. At Hillel Academy this comes in the form of everything from math manipulatives to microscopes in the science lab to student-created dramatic presentations about the weekly Torah reading. Students are encouraged to become involved with the subject being taught through hands-on learning.
Our early childhood education classes, preschool, and kindergarten, are a joy to watch. The children learn through songs, activities, games and personalized instruction the fundamentals of Jewish life and the skills needed to be thoughtful, confident students as they progress through their school year. In Judaic studies, they learn about the holidays, the Sabbath and other cultural events. They gain skill in recognizing the aleph-bais (Hebrew alphabet) and gain an appreciation for their heritage. In general studies, children acquire pre-reading skills in English (preschool), letter combinations (some students are actually reading in kindergarten), math basics and knowledge of the world around them. Most of all, they learn how to work and play with their fellow students and teachers. Early childhood learning classrooms are staffed by a teacher and at least two aides who are always ready to work with students on an individual basis.
